Why “Plumber in Hamilton” matters more than “Welcome to our site.”
Basic keyword tips for tradies.
Google Business Profile (maps, reviews, hours).
How SEO keeps working for you even while you’re on the tools.
Use the Right Words on Your Website
Google needs to understand what you do and where you do it. That means using the same words your customers type into search.
Instead of:
“Welcome to John’s Quality Services.”
Say:
“Licensed Electrician in Tauranga – Residential & Commercial.”
It’s clear, location-based, and tells people exactly what you offer.
Location, Location, Location
Most tradie jobs are local. Make sure your suburb, town, or region appears naturally in your website copy. For example:
“Deck building in Cambridge and Te Awamutu.”
“Plumbing services across Hamilton, Rototuna, and Chartwell.”
This helps you show up when people search for someone nearby.
Google Business Profile (Don't Skip This)
One of the easiest wins is setting up your Google Business Profile (the listing that pops up on Google Maps and search results with your phone number, reviews, and hours).
Add your logo, photos, and contact info.
Keep your hours up to date.
Ask happy customers to leave reviews (they boost your ranking).
Reviews Are Gold
Every good review helps you climb the rankings. More importantly, people trust them. Make it part of your process: once you finish a job and the customer’s happy, send them a quick text with a link to leave a Google review.
Keep Your Website Fresh
Google prefers websites that are active. That doesn’t mean you need to post every day, but updating your site with new photos, testimonials, or the occasional blog (like this one!) shows you’re still in business.
Don't Overcomplicate It
SEO companies can throw around scary jargon, but for most tradies, the basics are enough:
Clear service descriptions.
Location keywords.
A Google Business Profile with reviews.
A mobile-friendly site that loads quickly.
Nail those four things and you’ll be ahead of half your competition.
SEO is just about making it easy for people to find you online. Keep your wording clear, include your location, get reviews, and keep your Google Business Profile fresh. Do that, and when someone types “electrician near me”, your name will be the one they call.
